How to Design an App Icon That Looks Premium
A practical app icon design checklist for indie developers, founders, and mobile teams preparing a launch.
A premium app icon is not just a pretty image. It is a small, repeatable brand signal that has to work in App Store search, on a crowded home screen, and beside better-funded competitors.
The best icons are usually simple, specific, and confident. They avoid explaining the whole product and focus on making one visual idea memorable.
Start with one core idea
If your app is a finance tracker, the icon does not need to show money, charts, a wallet, a phone, and a checkmark at once. Pick one idea and make it own the square.
Good icon ideas often come from:
- The product category.
- The main user outcome.
- A memorable object from the app.
- A simple brand initial.
- A metaphor that users already understand.
Make it readable at small sizes
Many icons fail because they look good only at 1024 x 1024. Shrink the design until it is tiny. If the main shape disappears, simplify it.
Avoid:
- Small text.
- Thin outlines.
- Too many objects.
- Low contrast color pairs.
- UI screenshots inside the icon.
Use color deliberately
Color should help the icon stand out, but it should not do all the work. A good icon still reads in grayscale because the shape is strong.
For premium positioning, restrained color often beats a noisy rainbow palette. Choose one dominant color family, then add contrast only where it helps the focal point.
